New Paintings by Ben Horton
Oceanside, Ca, February 18, 2008 – Introducing Swiv Tackle Circus, one of the most exciting projects to hit the sleepy, gritty beach town of Oceanside, California! Swiv Tackle Circus is owned by world famous super couple Shaney jo Darden and Jeff Black along with dynamic duo sisters Desirée Dawn Kuhn & Kirsten Kuhn and is set to open its doors March 6. Swiv Tackle Circus is part gallery, part boutique creating a one-of-a-kind “Gallertique.”

Located at 530 S Coast Hwy, Swiv Tackle Circus takes over the brontosaurus-in-size Gardner’s Furniture building. This Oceanside landmark, built in the early 1970’s, has been completely gutted and redesigned. The Gallertique– is comprised of 40-foot long walls with one floating wall in a soaring 2-story-tall, boundless structure. A wall of windows faces Highway 101 that enables Swiv Tackle Circus to bring new meaning to “a clean, well lit space.”
The Gallertique will host monthly Neo-Contemporary art exhibitions; the premier show is “Memory Sale,” new paintings by Ben Horton. Swiv Tackle Circus brings more than 30 years of collective experience from the fine art world and looks forward to evolving Oceanside into an international fine art hub.
In an effort to support a global artist network, Swiv Tackle Circus has chosen to carry their local and international fashion friends including Obey, Lewsader, Upper Playground, Beck(y) Bags, Pony Attack!!, Beta Unit, Jessicafied, Imaginary Foundation and The Lovewright Company. The Gallertique– will also offer hard to find artist supplies such as Sabotoz spray paint from Greece and On The Run paint-pens together with art books and zines, including their San Francisco snapshot pals with the hot-off-the-presses Hamburger Eyes : Inside Burgerworld.
As with all circus’, there must be a backstage! “Backstage” as Swiv Tackle Circus comprises the ultra-alluring workshop for The Keep A Breast Foundation & Dawn of the Day, amongst others. The space is over two thousand square feet and also houses four studio rentals, a recording studio, an artists’ lounge & workspace, an expansive storage room complete with drive-in loading capabilities and a photo studio with an ultra-chic meeting area. Swiv Tackle Circus believes in creativity and the evolution of the artistic collective consciousness. Backstage is for members only.
About Ben Horton:
Ben Horton is one of the most influential Neo-Contemporary artists today. Owner of $LAVE Skateboards & Creative Director at Black Box Distribution which umbrellas Zero, Mystery, Fallen & $LAVE, Horton’s artistic style has been imperative to the evolution of skate design and fine art. Horton’s medium of preference is acrylic paint on wood along with newspaper, pages from old books, trash, etc. Horton has exhibited solo-shows at Black Market, Voice 1156 Gallery & Cals Pharmacy, amongst others. He was also chosen as a RVCA artist in the notable Artist Network Program.

About The Keep A Breast Foundation:
The Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to help eradicate breast cancer by informing young people about methods of prevention, early detection and support. Through art events, educational programs and fundraising efforts they seek to increase breast cancer awareness among young people so they are better equipped to make choices and develop habits that will benefit their long-term health and well-being. About The Swiv Tackle Circus Family:
Shaney jo is co-founder and Executive Director of The Keep A Breast Foundation, co-founder of art collective MODART and Creative Director of fashion brand Lewsader. Denim design is one of her passions and she has designed for Altamont, Toy Machine, Etnies, DC & Emerica. In recognition of her philanthropic work, Shaney jo was honored as a 2006 Yoplait Champion, Foam magazine’s Person you Ought to Know and chosen by Alternative Press magazine as one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Music Industry, 2008. Opening the Swiv Tackle Circus Gallertique has always been one of Shaney jo’s dreams. She is a Southern California native who has traveled the world and her mantra is “choose love over fear.”
Jeff Black is a Southern California native who has definitely been around the block and brings us a raw culture all his own. Otherwise known as “Blackass,” Jeff was raised in the jungles of East LA and learned to surf in the crowded waters of Huntington Beach Pier. This upbringing fueled his fire to skate, paint, DJ and play his drums all the way around the world and back again only to join forces with the legendary Tony Alva, where he managed and directed the world’s most famous skate shop! Blackass is now the Ringmaster/Designer/Builder/Resident DJ of Swiv Tackle Circus.
Desirée Dawn Kuhn & Kirsten Kuhn are native to Leucadia and are proud to be 6th generation San Diegans. After leaving California in 1999 and returning in 2007, the sisters Kuhn are more than thrilled to be back in their native stomping grounds! Desirée is has lived past lives as a fashion stylist in New York City and a Gallery Director & Art Dealer in Sun Valley. Words are her weapon of choice and she is owner of Dawn of the Day, a publicity firm, and still maintains being a personal Fashion Stylist for a select and private clientelle. Kirsten is a brilliant Art Historian and has lived in Florence, Italy, while studying the Renaissance & Baroque architecture. She is a gifted numbers wizard and keeps the stripes of Swiv Tackle Circus in-line. Kirsten practices Bikram yoga daily and her quest for the perfect pair of jeans has yet to be fulfilled.
